Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a form of arthritis that is common among older patients. It is characterized by joint cartilage degeneration--otherwise known as degenerative joint disease. The cartilage--a protein that provides a cushioning between the joint bones--breaks down and gradually disappears. Without adequate cartilage in the joint, the nerve endings are subject to irritation, which causes pain.

The most common location for osteoarthritis to occur is in the feet, hands, knees, hips, and spine. When osteoarthritis affects the spine, it can manifest in pain in various locations. For instance, pressure on the nerve endings in the lower back can cause pain to travel down the sciatic nerve route. This can cause pain in the back, or pain and tingling in the legs and feet.

Resolving Osteoarthritis
Without the shock-absorber affect of the cartilage, the pain from deterioration can become unbearable. After conservative treatment with anti-inflammatory and/or pain medications for osteoarthritis, it is often necessary to consider surgical intervention to obtain an acceptable level of relief.
