Herniated Nucleus PulposisThe nucleus pulposis is the technical term for the gel-like material inside your spinal discs. This material is kept in place by a layer of tough ligaments known at the annulus fibrosis, and each disc is sandwiched between two vertebrae. These discs allow the spine to move flexibly and take impact, acting like shock absorbers. A herniated disc occurs when the nucleus pulposis leaks out of the annulus fibrosis. This can occur as the result of stress such as heavy lifting, or as a result of wear and tear over time. When the disc herniates, the nucleus pulposis may float loose in the spinal canal, where it can exert pressure on the spinal nerves. Depending on where in your spine the rupture occurs, you may feel pain and/or numbness in your legs, feet, arms, hands, or other areas.
