Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition marked by fatigue and widespread pain, which occurs when pressure is applied to the area. Affected regions may include the upper chest, hips, knees, upper back, back of the head, elbows, shoulders and jaw. Other symptoms include persistent headaches, disturbed sleep, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Doctors do not know precisely what causes fibromyalgia. However, a range of factors thought to play a role includes chemical alterations in the brain, viral or bacterial infections, abnormal functioning of the sympathetic nervous system, alterations in muscle metabolism, and injury, particularly to the upper (cervical) portion of the spine. Often, injuries to the upper spine occur as the result of serious falls or auto accidents.

Coping with Fibromyalgia
Because fibromyalgia has diverse symptoms and its causes are not fully understood, you may undergo a variety of tests before receiving a positive diagnosis. Methods used to diagnose fibromyalgia include blood tests, X-rays, and MRIs. Physical therapy and certain medications may help relieve symptoms of fibromyalgia.
