Degenerative Spondylosis

Degenerative spondylosis, or degenerative disc disease, affects the integrity of the discs that separate the vertebrae. These spongy discs help to support and cushion the spine--when they degenerate, the space between vertebrae becomes reduced. As the discs deteriorate (often as a function of aging), they flatten out, causing the discs to protrude into the spinal canal while providing less cushioning to the vertebrae.

This type of degeneration has several repercussions. For one thing, the disc may fail to adequately separate the vertebrae, causing adjacent facet joints to overlap. This slippage typically results in localized pain and may also bring numbness in the body's extremities. Degenerative spondylosis can also cause discs to bulge out into the spinal canal, where they pinch nerves. Spondylosis often involves more than one disc and tends to have an earlier onset in men than in women.

Surgical Treatment for Degenerative Spondylosis
Degenerative spondylosis is a relatively common affliction estimated to instigate around two percent of all hospital admissions. A diagnosis can generally be confirmed using MRI or other professional imaging equipment. If physical therapy and medications don't alleviate the symptoms, there are helpful surgical options.

Located in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, The Bonati Institute for Arthroscopic Surgery offers the most advanced procedures for treating degenerative spondylosis and other chronic back and neck problems. The Bonati Arthroscopic Laser Cervical Decompression and the Bonati Arthroscopic Laser Foramenoplasty of the Lumbar Spine are the two operations most commonly used to effectively treat the disease. For further details and to request a free review of your MRI film, please visit the Bonati website: www.bonati.com.
