Degenerative Spinal Arthritis

Degenerative spinal arthritis is a condition that causes the components of the backbone to deteriorate over time. Arthritis can affect the facet joints of the spine, causing painful friction. As bones in the spinal column begin to break down, certain parts of the bones may protrude into the spinal canal, disturbing the nerves that are housed there. Arthritis can also cause the body to compensate for weakened structures by developing osteophytes, or bone spurs, which can press against nerves as well.

The discs between the vertebrae can also be affected by degenerative spinal arthritis. Known as degenerative disc disease, or DDD, this condition is marked by a breaking down of the annulus fibrosis, the covering that protects the spongy inner disc material. The damaged disc can bulge into the spinal canal, coming into contact with nerves, or it can rupture, sending its contents into the canal.

Degenerative Spinal Arthritis: From Symptoms to Treatment
Symptoms of degenerative spinal arthritis include local pain in the affected region of the spine as well as pain and numbness in the areas of the body connected to the compressed nerves. Cervical arthritis affects the upper part of the spine and causes symptoms in the shoulders, arms, hands, or chest. Lumbar arthritis occurs in the lower portion of the spine, affecting the legs and feet.

For serious cases of degenerative spinal arthritis, surgery is the usual option. The Bonati Institute for Advanced Arthroscopic Surgery (www.bonati.com) is a leader in the field of advanced spinal surgeries. The Bonati Procedures employ precise lasers, endoscopic cameras and other advanced tools to reduce recovery time, minimize complications, and significantly increase rates of success.
