Degenerative Spinal Arthritis

Degenerative spinal arthritis is a condition that causes the components of the backbone to deteriorate over time. Arthritis can affect the facet joints of the spine, causing painful friction. As bones in the spinal column begin to break down, certain parts of the bones may protrude into the spinal canal, disturbing the nerves that are housed there. Arthritis can also cause the body to compensate for weakened structures by developing osteophytes, or bone spurs, which can press against nerves as well.

The discs between the vertebrae can also be affected by degenerative spinal arthritis.
