Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease

The cervical spine consists of the first seven vertebrae running from the base of the skull to the chest. Sandwiched in between each of these vertebrae is a disc that is made of a gel-like material (the nucleus pulposus) enclosed within a more rigid covering, the annulus fibrosis. These discs act to cushion the vertebrae and absorb shock.

With cervical degenerative disc disease, or cervical DDD, one or more discs degenerates, creating too much friction in the surrounding area of the spine. This friction, coupled with the inflamed and irritated disc, cause pain in the immediate area. Because a disc lacks the blood supply to heal itself, degenerative disc disease is a chronic condition.

What to Do About Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease
Cervical degenerative disc disease is rarer than DDD in the lumbar region, but can still happen, often as the result of injury. If you are experiencing chronic pain in your neck area, cervical degenerative disc disease may be diagnosed through X-rays, a CT scan, or an MRI.
